BEDFONT AND STANWELL PLANS

Surrey council have plans to link up cycle routes with some already being built in Hounslow, including links to Heathrow airport. A lot of the plans are for shared paths rather than cycleways.

The plans include a continuation of the Bedfont Road cycle route and routes through Stanwell Moor.

Bedfont Road is wide enough for a high quality segregated cycleway protected from warehouse entrances.

Whilst I appreciate the attempt at making cycling safer and more accessible I am deeply concerned that the measures show lack of imagination in the effort to not restrict traffic flows. In Holland where I spend much of my time this is not so and therefore encourages people of all ages and abilities to cycle. Three should be segregated cycle paths as much as possible, every cycle path whether shared or not must have right of way across side roads with very clear markings so drivers have to obey. Cycle gutters are extremely difficult for all but the fit and crossings should put in instead. Where there is no option but to have shared use which should be minimal then very clear signage so that people walking are aware that this is so and it just not stop simply because the traffic engineers do not know how to complete a proper and safe infrastructure. Far too often people cycling are thrown back onto the. Road at the mist dangerous and difficult bits. Cycling has to be the preferred mode of transport for more people. And people who cycle should have more influence on the proposed plans.
